MC-ICP-MS analyses are now available; we recently installed a Nu Instruments Sapphire MC-ICP-MS in Fall 2024; method development in on-going. Please contact the instrument specialist if you are interested in working on the Sapphire.

Equipment:
Nu Instruments Sapphire Multiple-Collector ICP-MS (MC-ICP-MS) with Aridus and APEX desolvating nebulizers.
Location: 16 Hosler Building
Description: The Nu Sapphire Collision Cell MC-ICP-MS is a next generation multi-collector mass spectrometer with two operational modes. Operating in the high energy mode, the Sapphire behaves like a traditional multi-collector ICP-MS. In the low energy mode, with the use of collision cell technology, the Sapphire can measure the isotopic composition of systems that are typically impacted by unresolvable molecular interferences (e.g., 40Ar on 40Ca). Initial method development upon install of the Sapphire will focus on U isotopes with Li, Sr, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Cu to follow.
Training: Student researchers and faculty who may be interested in training on instrument operation and data interpretation, please contact the MC-ICP-MS analyst to schedule training and time on the instrument. While the number of training hours may vary, depending on the student’s knowledge and analytical skills, we require a minimum of eight training hours prior to allowing the student to independently operate the instrument.
Materials: Water (seawater, freshwater, pore fluids), sediments (carbonates and siliciclastics), soils, and rocks
Sample preparation and requirements: Sample preparation for isotopic analysis requires dissolution of solid materials and purification of the element of interest via ion chromatography. See information on sample preparation services provided by LIME and sample requirements. Please contact the MC-ICP-MS analyst prior to sample drop-off to ensure that your samples meet requirements.
Request analysis: Samples may be submitted to LIME’s MC-ICP-MS laboratory for analysis by navigating to the Request analysis page and clicking on the ‘Submit’ button. Please contact the MC-ICP-MS analyst for sample drop-off instructions.
