Scientific Director:
Kimberly Lau, Assistant Professor of Geosciences

Equipment:
Thermo Scientific Neptune Plus Multiple-Collector ICP-MS (MC-ICP-MS)  with Aridus II and APEX HF desolvating nebulizers.

Address: 16 Hosler Building

Description: The Thermo Scientific Neptune Plus MC-ICP-MS combines a plasma sample introduction system with a high resolution mass spectrometer that has the capability to separate polyatomic interferences from the analyte of interest to produce precise and accurate isotope ratios. Currently the Neptune is capable of high throughput analyses of Li, Mg, Ca, Fe, Cu, and U isotopes. In addition the high ionization efficiency in the plasma torch allows for analyses of non-traditional isotopes, e.g., Mg. In solution, purification of the element of interest is completed using ion chromatography. Purification using ion chromatography is a critical step in isotope analyses using the MC-ICP-MS, since possible interferences are removed allowing for accurate determination of isotope ratios. Our capabilities include determination of Li, Mg, Ca, Fe, Cu, and Sr isotopic composition of liquid samples.

Training: Student researchers and faculty who may be interested in training on instrument operation and data interpretation, please contact the MC-ICP-MS LIME laboratory to schedule training and time on the instrument. While the number of training hours may vary, depending on the student’s knowledge and analytical skills, we require a minimum of eight training hours prior to allowing the student to independently operate the instrument.
